Critical Care Awareness
Month at Barnes-Jewish Hospital (BJH):
A week-long presentation in the BJH Main Lobby announced Critical Care Awareness Month
with a banner, four posters and photographs of the multidisciplinary
critical care team. The poster content included information
on the recent patient “success story,” definitions
of "critical," "ICUs" and "intensivists,"
and statistics on the prevalence of critical care and the benefits
of intensivist-directed ICUs. The
presentation also publicized the expertise of the specialized
ICUs at BJH, Trauma Level I status and research at the new Center
for Critical Illness and Health Engineering (funded in part
by a BJH Foundation Award).

The Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons
recently re-verified BJH's trauma center at Level I, the highest
level of trauma care available. BJH is the busiest trauma center
in the state, treating more than 8,300 trauma patients each
year. It is also the only program in the state of Missouri to
earn this national distinction.
